What Da Wybe Is? This week, we’re uncovering the story behind the mysterious “shooting stars” that lit up Exuma’s skies. Plus, our ambassadors are bringing the heat in this issue.

Last Friday, a striking and unsettling spectacle unfolded over Exuma: fiery debris from SpaceX’s Starship crash rained down from the sky in a stunning display of shooting stars. Yet, far from a natural phenomenon, these lights were the remnants of a failed space mission. As the charred pieces of the 400-foot Starship plummeted from the heavens, it raised an eerie question—was this fiery descent a warning?
SpaceX’s Starship, the world’s largest and most powerful rocket, had launched from Texas on Thursday evening, aiming for a controlled reentry over the Indian Ocean. The test flight seemed promising initially, with the booster successfully returning to its launch pad—only the second time that feat had been achieved. But as the spacecraft ascended, disaster struck. One by one, its engines shut down, and communication was lost just 8 ½ minutes into the flight.
The resulting debris field, visible near Exuma, forced nearby flights to divert course, and a stream of fireballs lit the sky. The FAA, now investigating the crash, confirmed that the spacecraft had remained within its designated launch corridor, over water. Any surviving wreckage, they said, would have fallen along that path. Nonetheless, SpaceX quickly downplayed the incident, with CEO Elon Musk calling the mishap a “bump in the road,” others see it differently.
As SpaceX prepares for its eighth test flight and NASA looks ahead to using Starship for its Artemis missions to the moon, the question remains—could this witnessed crash over Exuma be a future cautionary tale for all?

Sometimes you just crave something different—something outside the usual peas and rice, pasta or fried food lineup. For me, that “something different” is almost always Japanese cuisine. It’s my second favorite (right behind Italian), and every time I travel, I make it a point to hunt down a solid bowl of ramen.
Unfortunately, my ramen search in Freeport hit a dead end, so I had no choice but to head to Nassau to see what the capital had to offer. After asking my Twitter fam for recommendations, I got two popular suggestions: Sushi Rokkan and Sushi Me. I decided to check out Sushi Rokkan first.
From the moment I pulled up, the vibes were already giving “quaint and cutesy.” Walking inside was even better—subtle, elegant, and downright cozy. I immediately fell in love with the decor. The hostess greeted me and started things off right by serving sparkling water and prawn crackers (or shrimp crackers) and yes, they were adorable.
The service? Quick and efficient. Granted, the restaurant wasn’t busy at the time, though there were quite a few takeout orders. Sushi Rokkan also has a sushi bar where you can sit and watch the chefs do their thing, plus a separate bar for cocktails. Honestly, this spot had all the makings of a new favorite for me.
Now for the food! Here’s what I ordered Spicy Tuna Roll, Baked Crab Roll, Tonkotsu Ramen, Rokkan Rice
Let’s talk presentation: Everything looked as good as it tasted. The sushi was fresh, flavorful, and worth the price. The tonkotsu ramen came out steaming hot, and it was super filling. Unfortunately, the chashu pork wasn’t seasoned the way I’m used to—typically, it’s braised in a blend of soy sauce, mirin, and sake for that deep, umami flavor. Here, it tasted more like plain cooked meat. The pork broth was also on the lighter side compared to others I’ve had. That said, the ramen was still solid overall.
The Rokkan Rice? The real MVP of the night. Packed with chicken, steak, and shrimp, it was excellent. Every protein held its own, and the flavors blended perfectly. I went in for ramen but left raving about this rice dish. By the end of the meal, I was too full to even think about dessert.
All in all, Sushi Rokkan was a hit, and I’ll definitely be back to explore more of their menu. Next up? Sushi Me. Once I try their ramen, you already know I’m coming back with a full comparison to see which spot reigns supreme! Stay tuned.

Bahamians Outraged Over Goombay Punch Can Redesign
The 2024/2025 Bahamas Goombay Punch Cup kicked off with excitement and celebration, but a brewing controversy has stolen the spotlight. The Caribbean Bottling Company (CBC), unveiled a limited-edition redesign for this season’s Goombay Punch cans, featuring six C-Class sloops participating in the competition. While CBC hoped to inspire national pride, many Bahamians are less than thrilled.
Goombay Punch has been a cultural staple for decades, recognized as much for its distinct pineapple flavor as its nostalgic can design. The bold, colorful, and retro packaging has remained largely unchanged, and for many, it’s as much a part of Bahamian identity as Junkanoo or conch salad.
Social media erupted as images of the new can designs surfaced. Critics described the revamped look as “unrecognizable” and “lacking the essence of Goombay Punch.” Some even accused CBC of prioritizing aesthetics over heritage. “Goombay Punch is more than a drink – it’s a symbol of Bahamian culture. Why mess with perfection?” tweeted one disgruntled fan.
Despite the backlash, the limited-edition cans are flying off shelves, with many purchasing them as collectibles. Still, the debate rages on: Should iconic brands evolve to stay fresh, or remain unchanged to honor tradition?
One thing is clear – our nation’s love for Goombay Punch, and the passion it inspires, remains unshaken.
