Quote of the week

On a rural farm in the state of Georgia we find a group of neighbors who must put aside their differences and unite in the face of a deadly threat. They try to navigate the twist and turns of this paranoia inducing situation they must also come to terms that some of their number maybe under the control of foreign influences.

Maggie Chenoweth is a veterinarian living on a farm with her husband James, daughter Meryl, son Arlo and mother-in-law Ellen. Ruben Shanley visits the farm with his wife Valeria and son Nicholas after their horse hurts itself during an uncharacteristic fit. Donald Kelly and his wife Claire come to the farm as weird power fluctuations are happening in the area. Different people wonder who is the man in the gas mask spray painting a blue line on the road in front of the farm.

Teacup is an intense drama with science fiction and horror influences that culminates in a satisfying mystery. The show is based on the book Stinger by Robert R McCammon but chooses to focus on a smaller group than the book. The cast is able to provide genuinely frightening and at time heartbreaking performances as they deal with an otherworldly threat while processing problems that seem mundane in comparison. The visuals are interesting with special effects that convey the awe inspiring to the awful, but the vagueness of story as it unfolds undercuts the impact in certain scenes. This works as a mini-series but we will see if it gets a season 2 to explore more of the lore.

I rate this series a rating of 3 & 1/2 out of 5

Meze Grill is described online as a Mediterranean restaurant with a steakhouse twist, located on West Bay Street in Nassau. When I was invited to check it out, I was curious about how these two vibes would blend.

From the moment I walked in, the dim lighting set an intimate, cozy vibe. The bar was buzzing with patrons, but there were still plenty of tables available. The tables are a bit small for big groups, and with our party of six, the menu took up a lot of space. Our server was super attentive and gave us awesome recommendations. The menu was extensive, with Mediterranean sharing plates, sushi, steaks, pasta, and seafood. It was tough to decide, but we started with the Meze Platter, featuring lamb, beef, and chicken kabobs, falafel, pita bread, tzatziki, crab cakes, and Moroccan lamb rolls.

Let me tell you, the lamb was AMAZING!

My favorite appetizer was the lamb rolls—the shredded lamb was soft and juicy inside a crispy roll, with tzatziki sauce that stole the show. I was already pretty full after the appetizers, but we still ordered entrees. I went with the spicy tuna roll, while others ordered the truffle mushroom pasta, roasted Greek chicken, lamb chops, and the whole branzino with wild mushroom rice.

The portion sizes were definitely worth it, and my sushi roll was the first spicy tuna roll that actually lived up to its name. The pasta was also spicy, but in a good way if you like heat. The Greek chicken was saucy with potatoes, but it’s probably not something I’d order. The branzino was an enormous grilled whole fish that I wish I had tried.

For dessert, we got the 30-layer chocolate cake—a mistake only because we were so full, but it was massive enough for everyone to share. The cake wasn’t too sweet and came with fruit, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup, which was perfect.

Overall, I’d rate Meze Grill an 8/10. The warm, intimate setting is perfect for a night out with your partner or group, though the dim lighting, small table space for groups, and limited parking can be a bit of a drawback. But the food?! They get Mediterranean right! I’m already looking forward to going back and trying more from their menu.

Snow in the desert? Sounds like a plot twist out of a movie, but it’s real, and it just happened in Saudi Arabia. For the first time in recorded history, parts of the usually sun-scorched Arabian desert were blanketed in snow, creating a sight that left locals and the global community stunned.

Historically known for its intense heat and endless sand dunes, the desert’s rare snowfall became an instant phenomenon, drawing locals out of their homes to experience the surreal event. Videos of camels, usually seen enduring blazing temperatures, strolling through snow-covered landscapes quickly went viral, highlighting the stark contrast between the familiar and the unexpected.

Experts suggest this rare event is a result of extreme shifts in weather patterns and climate variability. While snow isn’t unprecedented in certain parts of Saudi Arabia, such as the mountainous regions, seeing it in the desert is a completely different story. The sight of snow shimmering under the sun in one of the world's hottest places has sparked global conversations about climate change and its unpredictable effects.

This snowfall provided a brief but fascinating pause from the typical desert conditions and served as a reminder of how weather patterns are becoming increasingly erratic. The once-in-a-lifetime event drew tourists, photographers, and curious residents eager to capture a piece of history.

While it was a moment of joy and awe for many, it also underscores the broader, more complex issues of climate change that affect regions worldwide in unforeseen ways.
