From the Editor:

What Da Wybe Is? This week, we dive into the new generation of Bahamians and how they are remixing tradition with bold, unapologetic vision.

They grew up hearing, “That’s not how we used to do it.” But for this new wave of Bahamian youth, that’s exactly the point.

Today’s generation is moving differently more curious, more expressive, and more connected than ever before. They’re redefining what it means to be Bahamian, not by rejecting tradition, but by remixing it. From the way they speak up about social issues to how they use technology to amplify local voices, Gen Z is showing that culture isn’t something to preserve behind glass it’s something to evolve.

While some may seem out of order to the few who hold tightly to the old ways, the broader Gen Z is driven by purpose. They want meaning, not maintenance. They question because they care. They push boundaries not to offend, but to open space for new ideas. This generation isn’t disrespecting the past they’re building from it.

Walk into any schoolyard or youth center, and you’ll see it: students balancing ambition and authenticity, proud of their roots but unafraid to challenge outdated norms. They’re reshaping conversations about education, entrepreneurship, and identity.

There’s a quiet reverence in how they honor their elders, even as they reimagine the lessons passed down to them. It’s a cultural handoff an exchange of wisdom and innovation, tradition and technology, faith and freedom.

The result? A nation standing on the bridge between “what was” and “what’s next.”

In this issue, Wybe explores how young Bahamians are blending legacy with new energy through art, activism, fashion, and everyday choices that shape the islands’ future.

This is Generation in Transition. Respectfully breaking the mold.

Cardi B’s new album is bold, brash, and full of energy. She mixes heavy-hitting beats with sharp bars and plenty of confidence. Some tracks drag or feel like filler, but when she’s in her zone, she delivers. I don’t really listen to her, but from what I’ve heard so far, it’s alright.

Aren’t y’all tired of eating the same thing for lunch over and over again? In my Flavor & Vibe section, I love to highlight new and creative menu items from some of your favorite spots so we could really could start eating outside the box.

Right now, sourdough bread bowls are the latest hit at Flying Fish Gastrobar in Freeport and trust me, this ain’t no regular lunch. What’s better than a bowl you could actually eat? Their first rollout was a creamy lobster chowder loaded with fresh veggies, tender potatoes, and thick, juicy chunks of Bahamian lobster, all swimming in a rich, velvety chowder base that warms you from the inside out. It’s the kinda comfort food that makes you wanna lick the spoon.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get better, they dropped the Chili Bowl. A house-made sourdough bread bowl brimming with hearty, slow-simmered chili, topped with a gooey blanket of melted cheese, a cool drizzle of lime crema, and a sprinkle of fresh scallions for that extra kick. Every bite is a lil dance between spicy, tangy, and creamy goodness.

Fun fact: their sourdough starter, affectionately named “Audrey”, is over 20 years old and still going strong.

I, for one, can’t wait to see what other creative and downright mouthwatering sourdough bowls they whip up next.

Far more than a standard resort, Montage Cay, the redeveloped 53-acre Matt Lowe's Cay, is pioneering a new era of sustainable, eco-conscious luxury. The design incorporates over-water bungalows and uses materials that respect the Abacos’ pristine coral reefs and stunning marine reserves.

By focusing on eco-tourism and attracting a high-value clientele, Montage Cay not only elevates The Abacos' status on the global map but also sets a benchmark for the future of responsible luxury development in The Bahamas.

This past Thursday, at the Regency Theatre, the You Matter Foundation welcomed 104 senior high school students across Grand Bahama for its annual mental health seminar titled, “The Card Game Of Life; What's You're Next Move?”

The three hour seminar, themed ‘Stronger Than You Think?’ was hosted by You Matter Foundation team member Sasha Pinder who lead an open panel featuring educator and the first Mrs Bahamas World Keldra Pinder, Miss Universe Bahamas 2025 Maliqué Bowe, Miss Comso 2025 Beyonce Forbes, Mister High School Bahamas National 2024 Stanford McIntosh, and Mister St. Georges High 2024 Andrew Saunders Jr.

Founded on Grand Bahama in 2022, the You Matter Foundation was created by President Niesha Jennings and Vice Presidents Darrol Stubbs and Davino Dickerson who through their own journeys understood the need to destigmatize and educate on mental health, particularly for Bahamian youth, while spreading the foundation’s motto, ‘You are loved, you are important, and you matter.”

“[With mental health], we know it shapes every aspect of a person’s life from relationships … to overall well-being.” Darrol explained.

The panel discussed societal expectations, insecurities, resiliency, faith, and finding strength in expressing emotion while giving advice on each topic and allowing the students to affirm each other as they laid bare their troubles and personal stories.

The seminar, the latest in a series of four, is only one of You Matter Foundation’s endeavors as it also provides mental health workshops and organizes outreach programs.

In recent years, The Bahamas has made its own strides through the 2022 Mental Health Act and the 2025 Mental Health Act in Action symposium. However, the foundation acknowledges that more work is to be done.

Darrol stated, “Stigma still remains to be a major barrier … as many individuals still hesitate to seek help due to fear of judgment or misunderstanding.”

The Bahamas Global School Health Report in 2025 revealed that out of a sample of 2,211 students from ages 13 to 18 only 58.4% of them had someone to confide in.

As the foundation seeks to expand its educational efforts to families, educators, and community leaders, Darrol stated that there are other organizations such as the Grand Bahama Resilience Center, Bahamas Mental Health Association, Brightside Bahamas, and the Bahamas Psychological Association that are also ‘working tirelessly’ that Bahamians should be made aware of.

He added, “To any Bahamian who is struggling with mental health, I want to remind you that you are not alone. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness  it is an act of courage.”
